Testing Nexa Chalk for a Brand Identity Project

There’s something oddly satisfying about the process of starting a new brand identity project. You open your design board, a blank canvas waiting to be filled with personality and purpose. For this recent project, I was tasked with creating a visual identity for a small, locally-owned boutique that sells handmade stationery and creative supplies. The client wanted something warm, approachable, and slightly whimsical—something that would reflect the charm of their products.

As I began sketching out logo ideas, I found myself drawn to a font that felt both playful and refined. That’s when I pulled out Nexa Chalk. It’s a fun and playful shaded chalk handdrawn font inspired by natural chalk writing and drawing. At first glance, it reminded me of those childhood moments spent doodling on sidewalks or writing messages in chalk on windows. But there was a level of sophistication to it that made it feel like more than just a novelty typeface—it had character, texture, and a sense of authenticity.

I started by testing Nexa Chalk in a few different scenarios. First, I used it as the primary text in a logo concept. The soft, hand-drawn strokes gave the logo a friendly and inviting feel, which aligned perfectly with the boutique’s vibe. I also experimented with using it in a tagline and noticed how it added a layer of personality without overwhelming the design. The subtle shading and irregularity of the letters made each letter feel unique, which is a nice contrast to the uniformity of most digital fonts.

One of the things I appreciated about Nexa Chalk is its versatility. While it has a strong display feel, it still maintains readability when used in short-form text. I tested it on business cards, packaging mockups, and social media graphics, and each time it performed well. On a business card, it worked as an accent font, adding a touch of charm without distracting from the main content. On a product label, it felt like a natural fit, giving the label a handcrafted look that matched the boutique’s aesthetic.

When it came to branding materials, I considered how Nexa Chalk could integrate into a cohesive system. I paired it with a clean sans serif font for body text, creating a balance between the playful and the professional. This pairing allowed the brand to feel both approachable and trustworthy. I also explored using it in a headline format, where its casual style helped set the tone for the brand’s voice. It wasn’t too bold, but it had enough presence to make an impact.

Another thing I noticed was how Nexa Chalk handled different design contexts. On a shop sign, it felt lively and engaging, drawing people in with its hand-drawn charm. On a website hero section, it worked well as a headline, adding a bit of warmth to the digital space. Even on Instagram posts, where typography needs to stand out quickly, Nexa Chalk held its own. It was clear, readable, and visually interesting all at once.

Of course, no font is perfect for every situation. I did consider some limitations. Because it’s a display font, it’s not ideal for long blocks of text. It works best in headlines, logos, and short-form text. That said, I found that even when used sparingly, it could elevate a design significantly. It brought a sense of playfulness and creativity that aligned with the boutique’s mission.

Before committing to Nexa Chalk for the full brand system, I made sure to test it across different mediums. I printed out mockups to see how it looked in print and viewed them on screen to ensure consistency. I also checked the font’s included styles, alternates, and ligatures to see if they offered flexibility in design. The fact that it supported multiple weights and styles gave me more options to work with, which was a plus.

For clients, I always recommend testing fonts before finalizing a brand system. It’s easy to fall in love with a font during the initial stages, but seeing how it performs in real-world applications is crucial. With Nexa Chalk, I saw firsthand how it could enhance a brand’s visual identity while maintaining clarity and professionalism.

In the end, Nexa Chalk became a key element in the boutique’s visual identity. It helped define the brand’s personality and created a consistent look across all materials. Whether it was on a product label, a social media post, or a website header, it maintained its charm and readability. It proved to be a great choice for a project that needed both warmth and structure.

If you’re working on a brand identity project that calls for a bit of playfulness and personality, Nexa Chalk is worth considering. It’s not just a font—it’s a tool that can help bring your brand to life in a way that feels authentic and engaging. Just remember to use it wisely, and always pair it with other fonts that complement its style.
